History of the garden
In 1923, the French artist Jacques Majorelle bought a piece of land in Marrakech, at the time Morocco was a protectorate of France. He had a blue Moroccan-style villa built for himself on the piece of land. He built his garden around the villa, which later became known as Jardin Majorelle (Majorelle Garden). Eventually, the garden grew to 4 hectares.
It took Jacques Majorelle nearly forty years to complete the garden. The garden contains plants from all continents that he collected during his travels. Maintaining the garden was expensive, which is why Majorelle opened the garden to the public in 1947. Since then, people can admire the garden for a fee. Until the 1950s, Jaques Majorelle lived in the striking blue villa in the garden. In the 1980s, fashion designers Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Bergé bought the garden to restore it. The blue villa now functions as a Berber museum.
